Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
